Steam Roller Printing Festival at OCAD University

Butterfield Park: October 22, 10am -5pm

Large-scale images provided by artists: Alexei Vella, Amanda Nedham, Cathy Daley, Christopher Hutsul, Cybèle Young, Jeannie Thib, Julie Voyce, Lauren Nurse, Libby Hague, Luke Painter, and MORE! Co-ordination in the production and printing of each image by 4th-year printmaking students along with the help of other keen printmakers. Come take part in the festival and watch the printing of over 12 large-scale images with a steam roller!

Lauren Moore and I are screenprinting part of Lauren Nurse 's image (below) onto a 4' x 4' (approx.) piece of linoleum. Assisting us carve out this large-scale image is Melissa Cormier, Flora Shum, and the artist herself. We have lots of carving ahead of us. I'll be posting up more photos as the project progresses.

During the last week of school I collaborated with a friend, Flora Shum on a 30" x 44" lithograph print using one of the largest litho stones in Canada. It was a side-project we decided on spur of the moment. Considering the short amount of time we had to grain, draw, process, and print, I am very pleased with the resulting image. Aanchal Malhotra, another artist and friend of mine was there to photograph the two of as we worked together on the stone. She posted the photos on her blog: Click here

I finally have the chance to post up some images of what I've been working on in the studio these passed four chaotic months.

The last two images (a double-sided print) are actually part of an anthology of prints by OCAD printmaking students and faculty which were professionally bound into a book titled Transformation. Flora Shum

So I've been helping a friend out as she prepares for the graduate exhibition coming up at OCAD (May 6-9). She has designed an installation which includes etchings printed on handmade flax paper, some of which contain intricately cut pieces of copper embedded within the sheets. These copper embedded flax papers are suspended upright within handmade boxes and rest atop custom-built shelves mounted on the wall. Since I love working with wood, I offered to help her design and build the shelves.

Included will be the works of 24 participants (Fourth-Year OCAD students and faculty) and their interpretations of the theme Transformation through various printmaking processes. I'm very excited to see the final product once everyones images are bound together. I'm sure it's going to look amazing.

So I spent the day at my Dad's shop. Now that I think about it, my dad has had this shop ever since I was born and I have never actually taken advantage of it, until now. It is my new hideaway place. I feel very fortunate to have somewhere else to work other than home or school. Some people don't have that choice. I'm very excited to see what projects I will come up with having access to all the materials and machines that clutter the shop.

Truly an inspirational book. Page after page my perspectives on life and love are challenged, reassessed and altered (but not tainted). Unfortunately it's a very short book (190 pages) so I'm taking my time reading it. I'm dreading the day I get to the last page.

Shredding Frustrations

These were some of my prints but now they are shredded due to my dissatisfaction with them. The action of shredding the prints speaks to my frustration with my current artistic practice. In the past I have disposed of my work because keeping it was unbearable. I'm not exaggerating - it's a problem. However, realizing how much money and materials I was probably wasting, I decided to take a different approach: ripping up my prints but keeping the remnants. Once the pile of ripped prints started to take up more space than I could easily store away (yes there were that many prints) I decided to shred them into even smaller pieces. Finally, I decided to photograph the shreds then created a digital print that I can actually bear holding on to, for now.

Included are lithographs, screenprints, drypoints, etchings, reliefs and digital prints.
